Best Car Insurance - A Review

Our look at getting the best car insurance cover in the UK

If you own a car in the UK, you are, of course, legally required to insure your vehicle. Given the relatively high cost of car insurance, many select the lowest-priced cover that they can find despite this often being associated with rather limited policy features and, typically, a higher excess. The prominence of price comparison sites encourages this prioritisation of price over quality of cover.

Car insurance comparison services, however, are simply responding to a market where most people like to find cheap car insurance prices and a quick and easy way to do this is to compare loads of quotes with one form.

There is a problem with all of this however. The more popular that price comparison sites become, the more car insurance companies need to compete on price and the more that the 'no frills' type of cover becomes the norm. It can't be easily argued that this is ultimately in the consumer's interest as people will gradually find out as they increasingly make claims on these sorts of policies and find that they face many, perhaps unexpected, costs themselves.

People are clearly taking the view that a cheap policy will save them money and if a claim is not needed, they've done well.  Buying car insurance that you then hope never to claim on is, however, a faulty approach that could become highly self-defeating, especially in the event of a more serious accident.

Many price comparison sites are beginning to offer better policy information in order that some assessment of what you are getting can be made alongside price considerations. This is to be welcomed but such information is often highly summarised, lacking the detail for a proper assessment or comparison between policies.

The solution is probably something that people do infrequently and that is to look at each car insurance company's own website for full policy details. It's wise to do this for any policy that you are about to buy via a price comparison system and you do need to ask yourself whether the cover is adequate for your needs, particularly if you are considering a very cheap quote.

The wisest choice that represents the best balance between cost and the associated level of cover is unlikely to be the cheapest quote that you find on a price comparison site. Such a quote is the cheapest of perhaps 1000s of prices and is likely to be limited in its scope, even when compared to other no frills policies.

So where does this leave you? Well, the key is to investigate the cover rather than buy based mainly or completely on price. Your choice of car insurance is actually quite important, it shouldn't be bought with limited knowledge of what you are geting and with no clear sense of whether it will meet your needs.

What this means in practice is that when you use a price comparison site, you should aim to check over several policies in detail before making a final selection. If this sounds like more work than you would wish for, there is another, better, approach. It's an approach that many dismiss on the basis that it does not provide them with the opportunity to check lots of policy prices but it's valid for the reasons we'll now present.

So what is it? Well, it's to go direct to a top car insurance provider of your choice without using a price comparison system at all. These large car insurers provide built-in quality as standard; so even if you pay limited attention to the policy features you can buy with greater confidence. In short, they tend to provide the type of cover that you can rely on in an accident. As regards price, car insurance is one of the most competitive markets of all. Providers watch competitors pricing closely and always aim to match or beat them for like policies. As a result there's no need to be overly preoccupied with checking lots of prices if you go to a large, well-established provider. You maybe won't get the cheapest price of all but that's to be welcomed if you're getting the right policy.

There are not all that many websites that provide information in relation to the policies offered by numerous top car insurance companies but one that does provide this information is this online car insurance service.

You can, of course, check several car insurance quotes as filling in online quote forms doesn't take all that long. Indeed, many compare direct and price comparison prices and policies. There's no need to feel obliged to rush the process. Better that you make the right choice that will serve you well if you need it.
